Sportswear demands in 2022: Sustainability and environmental friendliness are the key!

Exercise and weight loss are often on the New Year’s flag list, this inevitably leads people to invest in sportswear and equipment. In 2022, consumers will continue to seek versatile sportswear. The demand stems from the need for hybrid clothing that consumers want to wear them on weekends at home, during workouts, and between outings. According to reports from major sports groups, it is predictable that the versatile sportswear will continue to be in high demand.

According to the survey of Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle Monitor TM, when it comes to exercising, 46% consumers say they mostly wear informal sportswear. For example, 70% of consumers own five or more t-shirts for exercise, and more than 51% own five or more sweatshirts (hoodies). The above categories of sports or non-sports clothing are the types of consumers are used to wearing when exercising.

It is worth noting that McKinsey & Company proposed in the state of fashion in 2022 that paying attention to environmentally friendly fabrics will much more attract consumers. Consumers are increasingly concerned about where materials come from, how products are made and whether people are treated fairly.

The Monitor TM study also says that brands and retailers should be thinking back when it comes to environmentally conscious sportswear, with 78% consumers believing that clothing made mainly from cotton is the most sustainable and environmentally friendly. Fifty-two percent of consumers strongly want their sportswear to be made of cotton or cotton blends.

The attention to outdoor sports has also prompted consumers to accept the change of outdoor clothing, and they pay more attention to the air permeability and waterproof characteristics of outdoor clothing. Performance-oriented materials and details facilitate the innovation and development of sustainable fabrics

It predicted that from 2023-2024, ultra-light cotton with silk, wavy jacquard loops with undulating patterns and cotton blends would be the main trend for sustainable sportswear. And a complementary production of sustainable accessories and packaging, also become an essential part of environmentally friendly clothing.
