Golf Masters Green Jacket: Designers, What to Know, History

As the Masters kicks off this weekend, WWD breaks down everything you need to know about the famous green jacket.
Fans will have a chance to see some of their favorite golfers play as another Masters tournament kicks off this weekend.
At the end of the weekend, whoever wins the Masters will finally have a chance to don the famous green jacket.
Hideki Matsuyama has won the 2021 Masters, earning the right to wear the coveted single-breasted jacket. The dress is embroidered with the official Masters logo, a map of the United States with a flagpole located in Augusta, Georgia, where the competition takes place.
The tradition began in 1937, when members of the Augusta National Golf Club began wearing jackets for easy identification by customers and non-members.
While the New York-based company Brooks Uniform Co. made the original jackets, the Cincinnati-based Hamilton Tailoring Co. has been making blazers for the past three decades.
Each garment is designed in wool fabric and takes about a month to make, and features a custom brass button with the Augusta National logo on the top.The owner’s name is also sewn onto the inside label.
The Masters champion first won the green jacket in 1949, when Sam Snead won the tournament. The move is to make him an honorary member of the Augusta National Golf Club.It has been awarded to every winner since.
Traditionally, the winner of the previous Masters will award the green jacket to the new champion. For example, Matsuyama is likely the one who presented the dress to the winner of this year’s tournament.
However, if there is a chance to win the championship again, the Masters President will present the jacket to the champion.
While green Masters jackets should remain on the club grounds and are prohibited from being taken off the field, the winner can take them home and return them to the club the following year.
This year’s Masters will be an exciting year, marking the return of Tiger Woods, who suffered a broken right leg in a February 2021 crash and has not played on the PGA Tour since the 2020 Masters .
